How to Stay Awake in Church

We have come to that time of year when you wish you could destroy your alarm clock and every time you sit in a warm room, you start yawning. When you are half as alert as normal, God's Word becomes twice as important. So here are ten tips to help you combat tuning God out in services.

1. Chew gum, or pop breath mints. Mint flavoring helps you feel awake.

2. Pinch yourself.
3. Sit up very straight.
4. Lift your feet.

5. Flex and relax your muscles - mostly ones people will not see, ie. not your face.
6. Keep someone awake next to you.

7. Hold your breath.
8. Tap your foot - be sure not to make too much noise or shake the people next to you.
9. Say, "Amen" at an appropriate point.
10. Have someone else keep you awake.

If you have other tips I missed, please leave them in the comments.

Special thanks to Sarah Smitely for taking the pictures and Janine Militar for helping me demonstrate.

  1. You forgot the most important one! Coffee. It is guaranteed to keep you awake, and it will also give you great pleasure during consumption. Unlike some of the options here (intentionally inflicting pain on yourself, losing your dignity asking someone to keep you awake, ect) you will enjoy every moment of this activity. And as a side note, when it is cold out the warm drink will also be nice!

  2. It has also been noted that saying "Amen" shortens the sermon by 10 seconds be cause the preacher feels he is getting his point across. Thus saying "Amen" at the appropriate time will both keep you awake and shorten the time that you have to try to stay awake.

  3. Unfortunately I cannot take credit for this excellent photography. Giving credit where credit is due, this would be my sister Rachel's work.

  4. If you're really serious...fireball candy has NEVER failed me.

  5. Take notes. It is harder to fall asleep while writing than while not writing.
